Sing, Eat, Repeat: Inside the Bali Community Choir
Holiday Potluck

14 December 2025, Sheila Rose Villa,Denpasar Timur, Bali

The first challenge of the evening was finding space on the potluck table.

As choir members arrived at Sheila Rose Villa carrying serving dishes, desserts, fruit platters,
and homemade treats, every available corner quickly filled. What began as a neatly arranged
buffet soon became a colourful patchwork of contributions from across the Bali Community
Choir family.

IThere were sweet and savoury pastries, fresh fruit, vegetables and dips, festive desserts, local
favourites, and family recipes. Some dishes disappeared almost as quickly as they arrived.
Others sparked conversations about where the recipe came from and who had made it.

For the 25 members, family members, and friends gathered that evening, the annual holiday
potluck was not about putting on a performance. It was about enjoying each other’s company
after another year of rehearsals, concerts, and shared experiences.

A House Full of Familiar Faces

The villa’s living room quickly settled into the comfortable rhythm of a family gathering.

People moved between the buffet table and the sofas, catching up with friends they may not
have seen since the choir’s most recent performance. Conversations drifted between English
and Indonesian. Laughter carried across the room as plates were filled and stories exchanged.

Festive headbands appeared everywhere. Reindeer antlers bobbed above conversations. Santa
decorations perched on heads. Bright reds and greens added to the holiday atmosphere
without anyone taking the occasion too seriously.

What stood out most was the mix of generations sharing the same space.

Children, parents, long-time choir members, and senior members sat side by side, chatting as
naturally as old friends. In one corner, younger guests compared desserts while nearby, longstanding choir members swapped memories from years of singing together. The gathering
reflected something that has always been part of Bali Community Choir: people of different
ages, backgrounds, and cultures finding connection through a shared love of music.

When the Music Takes Over

At some point, as it often does with choir members, the singing began.

Near the keyboard and music stand, red lyric folders started appearing in people’s hands. A
few singers gathered first. Then a few more joined. Before long, the room’s attention shifted
from conversation to music.

There was no formal announcement and no conductor calling everyone into position. The
transition happened naturally.

Some guests sang from the lyric sheets. Others listened from the couches while finishing
dessert. Children wandered in and out of the group. Family members joined the choruses they
recognised.

The setting could not have been more different from a concert hall. Bare feet replaced
performance shoes. Plates of food sat beside music folders. People laughed between songs
when someone missed an entry or started on the wrong verse.

Yet the joy of singing together was exactly the same.

The Feast Behind the Feast

As impressive as the food looked, the potluck was never really about the food itself.

Each dish represented somebody choosing to contribute something to the evening. One
person brought sweets. Another prepared savoury snacks. Someone arrived with fruit.
Someone else brought homemade desserts.

By the time the table was fully assembled, it told a story of collective generosity.

The choir often talks about harmony in musical terms, but this was harmony expressed in
another way: many people each bringing a small contribution that helped create something
much larger than any one person could provide alone.

In that sense, the potluck reflected the spirit of gotong royong that continues to shape
community life across Indonesia—a reminder that shared effort often creates the most
meaningful experiences.

More Than a Choir

The evening’s most memorable image may well have been the final group photo.

Gathered together on sofas and chairs, choir members, family members, children, and senior
guests squeezed into the frame wearing antlers, holiday bows, and wide smiles. Peace signs
appeared. Someone leaned into a friend. Others laughed before the photo was even taken.

Bali Community Choir is built around singing, but evenings like this reveal why members
keep returning year after year. Beyond the rehearsals and performances, they find friendship,
support, and a sense of belonging.

As the evening wound down, conversations continued long after the singing ended. The
buffet table showed the happy signs of a successful potluck, and nobody seemed particularly
eager to say goodbye.

For one December evening in Denpasar, the choir gathered not to rehearse or perform, but
simply to enjoy being together. The result was exactly what the title promised: singing,
eating, and repeating—surrounded by good company.
