When Christmas Carols Found a Home Beneath the Joglo

19 December 2025 | Biku Seminyak, Bali

The pace of Seminyak in December is rarely slow. Streets fill with holiday visitors,
restaurants buzz with activity, and the days seem to move a little faster as Christmas
approaches.

Inside Biku, however, the mood was entirely different.

Beneath the carved timber beams of the venue’s historic Javanese joglo, around 100 guests
gathered for Yuletide Under the Joglo, an afternoon of Christmas music, festive high tea, and
community connection presented by Bali Community Choir.

As audience members settled into their seats, choir members made final preparations nearby.
Some adjusted Santa hats, others straightened strands of tinsel or shared a quiet laugh before
the music began. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming—more like a gathering of
friends than a formal concert.

A Room Built for Listening

Biku’s 150-year-old joglo provided a setting unlike any concert hall

The warm timber interior seemed to draw people closer together. Without large staging or
elaborate production, the focus remained firmly on the music and the people sharing it.

When the opening notes rang out, the room fell quiet.

The choir’s voices rose naturally through the wooden space, filling every corner of the joglo
without overpowering it. Audience members listened closely as familiar carols such as Silent
Night, Joy to the World, and O Holy Night unfolded beneath the high timber ceiling.

For many guests, these were songs woven into family traditions and childhood memories.
Some quietly sang along from their seats. Others smiled in recognition as favourite melodies
returned.

Music, Tea, and Conversation

Following the first performance set, guests gathered around tables for refreshments and
conversation.

Red music folders sat beside teacups and dessert plates as choir members mingled with
audience members throughout the venue. New friendships formed easily. Familiar faces
reunited. Conversations drifted between holiday plans, favourite Christmas songs, and stories
from home.

One of the hallmarks of Bali Community Choir is the diversity of its membership, and that
spirit was reflected throughout the afternoon. Indonesian and international singers shared the

stage, while audience members from many backgrounds shared the same tables, creating a
gathering that felt distinctly Bali.

The Joy of Singing Together

As the second half of the program drew to a close, the audience was invited to join in.

What began with a few voices soon spread across the room.

Children sang with enthusiasm, families joined in, and guests who had arrived as listeners
became part of the music itself. Songbooks were shared across tables, and choir members
encouraged participation with smiles and gestures of invitation.

By the time We Wish You a Merry Christmas reached its final chorus, voices were rising
from every corner of the joglo.

For a few minutes, there was no clear distinction between performers and audience. Everyone
was simply singing together.

After the Final Applause

The concert concluded with a standing ovation, but nobody seemed in a hurry to leave

Groups gathered beneath the Christmas decorations for photographs. Choir members posed
with audience members and friends. Laughter echoed through the room as singers exchanged
holiday greetings and reflected on favourite moments from the afternoon.

One photograph captured the spirit of the event perfectly: choir members from different
generations sitting shoulder to shoulder, still wearing festive antlers, Santa hats, and tinsel
long after the performance had finished. It was a reminder that Bali Community Choir is built
on more than rehearsals and concerts. It is built on friendships that continue long after the
music ends.

More Than a Concert

Yuletide Under the Joglo offered something increasingly rare during the busy holiday season:
time to slow down.

Within a historic Indonesian building, Christmas traditions from many parts of the world
found a place to coexist. Music created a bridge between cultures, generations, and
experiences, while the welcoming atmosphere encouraged strangers to become part of the
same celebration

For the choir, it was another opportunity to share music with the community. For audience
members, it was a chance to pause, listen, and participate. For everyone in the room, it
became a Christmas memory shaped not by spectacle, but by simple moments of connection.

Bali Community Choir extends heartfelt thanks to Ibu Asri, our volunteers, venue partners,
audience members, and choir members for helping create such a memorable afternoon.

As the festive season continued across Bali, the warmth of voices raised together beneath the
joglo lingered long after the final carol had ended.
