The sound of quiet conversation gradually gave way to silence as the choir assembled beneath the distinctive Balinese stage. Dressed in brightly coloured shirts, singers from many countries took their places with music folders in hand, exchanging encouraging smiles before turning their attention to conductor Brendan O’Donnell.

When he raised his hand to begin, weeks of preparation became a shared musical experience for everyone in the room.

One of the first things the audience would have noticed was the choir itself.

There were long-time members standing beside singers who had joined only recently. Indonesian voices blended with those of members from Australia, Europe, Asia and beyond. Different ages, different backgrounds and different life experiences came together as one ensemble, united by a love of singing.

The colourful choir uniforms reflected that diversity, while the music demonstrated how individual voices could come together in harmony.

The evening’s programme was carefully designed to take listeners on a varied musical journey.

From the richness of classical choral works to modern favourites and sacred music, each piece brought its own character and emotion. Some invited quiet reflection, while others filled the hall with energy and warmth.

Rather than showcasing a single musical style, the concert celebrated the versatility of a community choir willing to explore a wide range of repertoire throughout the year.

The audience responded warmly as each performance unfolded, rewarding the singers’ dedication with generous applause.

What audiences witnessed on stage represented months of commitment.

Every rehearsal added another layer of confidence. Harmonies became stronger, entrances more precise, and unfamiliar faces gradually became friends. Experienced members encouraged newcomers, while everyone shared the responsibility of creating a balanced and expressive choir sound.

Community choirs are built one person at a time.

One particularly meaningful moment came as Brendan O’Donnell acknowledged a supporter with a warm handshake on stage. It was a simple gesture, yet one that reflected the gratitude and mutual respect that have always been part of the choir’s culture.

As the evening came to a close, audience members lingered to congratulate performers, reconnect with friends, and meet choir members after the performance.

These conversations have always been an important part of Bali Community Choir’s annual concerts. They transform an evening of music into an opportunity for people from different backgrounds to build new friendships and strengthen existing ones.

Long after the final applause faded, the sense of community created through singing continued well beyond the stage.
