The Bali Ball: A Feast for the Senses

15 December 2012 | Nikko Bali Resort & Spa, Nusa Dua

As guests arrived at Nikko Bali Resort & Spa for The Bali Ball: A Feast for the Senses, the
ballroom glowed beneath gold drapery and warm stage lights. Tables were set for an evening
of dining, fundraising, and celebration, while conversations flowed among community
leaders, business owners, visitors, and long-time Bali residents.

Then the lights turned toward the stage.

At the front of the room, Bali Community Choir founder and musical director Brendan
O’Donnell, dressed in a traditional Indonesian batik shirt, raised his hands to begin. Behind
him stood a choir unlike any other on the island: local Balinese singers and international
residents gathered in a single ensemble, holding brightly coloured music folders and waiting
for the first note.

For many guests, it was their first introduction to the evening’s message—that meaningful
change happens when people come together.

Opening the Evening

The choir’s performance was one of the first moments of the gala, setting the tone for
everything that followed.

Against the backdrop of the event’s towering “Feast for the Senses” banner, voices from
different countries, cultures, and walks of life blended together in song. The ballroom was
large, but the atmosphere quickly became more intimate. Guests paused their conversations,
turned toward the stage, and settled into the shared experience unfolding before them.

The performance did more than welcome people into the room. It reminded everyone why
they were there.

This was not simply a social event. It was a fundraising evening dedicated to supporting
grassroots initiatives and community programs across Bali.

A Choir That Reflected the Community It Served

One of the striking things about the photograph from that evening is the range of faces on
stage.

Teachers stood beside business owners. Indonesians stood beside expatriates. Some choir
members had years of performing experience, while others had joined simply because they
enjoyed singing with friends each week.

Together, they represented a version of Bali that is not always visible: a community built
through participation, friendship, and shared purpose.

That spirit mirrored the event itself. Around the ballroom sat people from many backgrounds,
all contributing in different ways to causes that would benefit communities across the island.

Supporting Bali’s Grassroots Charities

At its heart, The Bali Ball was about transforming generosity into meaningful impact

The evening brought together an extraordinary mix of people—local and expatriate residents,
hospitality leaders, business owners, philanthropists, and visitors—all united by a common
goal: supporting organisations working directly with Bali’s most vulnerable communities.

Funds raised throughout the event helped strengthen grassroots initiatives focused on
education, healthcare, family welfare, and community development. By supporting locally
driven programs, guests were contributing to practical, long-term solutions that improve lives
across the island.

As conversations continued around the ballroom and fundraising activities unfolded, a shared
sense of purpose connected everyone in attendance. The choir’s opening performance served
as a fitting beginning to an evening dedicated not only to celebration, but also to compassion,
collaboration, and positive change.

More Than Entertainment

Looking back, what stands out is how naturally music became part of the event’s larger
purpose.

The choir did not perform as the headline attraction. They performed as contributors to a
community effort.

Their role was to help create a welcoming beginning to the evening—to bring energy into the
room, focus attention on the cause, and remind guests that collective action often begins with
shared experiences.

The applause that followed was not only appreciation for the singers. It was recognition of
what the evening represented.

Looking Back

More than a decade later, the photograph from The Bali Ball captures more than a
performance.

It captures a moment when a diverse group of singers stood together at the start of an evening
dedicated to helping others. It captures a partnership between the arts, philanthropy, and
community action. And it captures something that continues to define Bali Community Choir
today: the belief that music can bring people together in ways that create lasting impact
beyond the stage.

For everyone who stood in that ballroom in December 2012, the evening was about far more
than a concert or a gala dinner. It was about using the talents, resources, and generosity of a
community to support the people who needed it most.
