When Voices Blended with Birdsong: A Christmas Concert for Conservation
On a warm December afternoon, Christmas carols drifted through the gardens of Bali Bird
Park as visitors paused between aviaries to listen. Families gathered near the performance
area, children pointed excitedly at colourful birds overhead, and choir members prepared to
share an afternoon of festive music in one of Bali’s most distinctive settings
Presented in partnership with Bali Bird Park, the concert welcomed approximately 300
visitors for a Christmas celebration that combined music, community, and environmental
awareness. Surrounded by wildlife conservation exhibits and some of Indonesia’s most
remarkable bird species, the event offered a reminder that the holiday season can also be a
time to reflect on our relationship with the natural world.
A Unique Setting for Christmas Music
Unlike a traditional concert hall or church, Bali Bird Park provided a backdrop that was very
much alive.
As audience members explored the park throughout the afternoon, the sounds of Christmas
music mixed naturally with birdsong from nearby aviaries. Visitors moved between
conservation exhibits and garden pathways before gathering to enjoy the performances,
creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
The venue was a fitting choice for an event supporting the park’s Fighting Extinction and
Practice Less Plastic campaigns. By hosting the concert within a working conservation
environment, Bali Bird Park invited guests to engage not only with music, but also with the
important work being done to protect wildlife and promote more sustainable choices.
Familiar Carols and Shared Traditions
The concert unfolded in two performance sessions separated by a refreshment break, giving
visitors time to enjoy both the music and the park.
Bali Community Choir presented a programme of much-loved Christmas favourites,
including Silent Night, Joy to the World, O Holy Night, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, and
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
Many audience members recognised the songs from the first few notes. Some sang quietly
along from their seats, while others smiled as familiar melodies brought back memories of
Christmas celebrations from years gone by.
The programme moved comfortably between reflective moments and joyful celebration. As
voices rose together in harmony, visitors from different backgrounds and countries shared an
experience rooted in music, tradition, and community.
When the Audience Joined In
One of the most memorable moments came at the end of the afternoon
As the choir began the final carol, a few audience members quietly joined in. By the second
verse, more voices could be heard around the performance area. Families sang together,
visitors followed along with familiar lyrics, and choir members responded with smiles as the
audience became part of the performance.
What had begun as a concert ended as a community singalong.
For a few minutes, there was little distinction between performers and listeners. The music
belonged to everyone.
When the final notes faded and the applause began, many guests chose to stay rather than
leave immediately. Audience members gathered to speak with choir members, take
photographs, and share their appreciation for the performance. Conversations continued long
after the last song, extending the sense of connection created throughout the afternoon.
Music in Support of Conservation
While the concert celebrated the Christmas season, it also supported a broader message.
Throughout the park, visitors encountered exhibits and educational displays highlighting
wildlife conservation, endangered species, and practical ways to reduce plastic waste. The
concert complemented these efforts by bringing people together in a positive and memorable
setting.
For many guests, the experience offered a different way to engage with environmental issues.
Rather than encountering conservation messages in isolation, they became part of a shared
community event that connected music, learning, and action.
The partnership also demonstrated how local arts organisations can help amplify important
community initiatives. By lending their voices to the occasion, choir members helped draw
attention to causes that extend well beyond the concert itself.
Bringing People Together
Events like this reflect the unique role community arts can play in strengthening connections
Bali Community Choir brings together singers from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures,
and professions, united by a shared love of music. At Bali Bird Park, that spirit extended
beyond the choir to include visitors, volunteers, venue staff, and conservation advocates.
The result was more than a performance. It was a gathering where people connected through
music while supporting a shared commitment to protecting the environment and preserving
Bali’s natural heritage.
For visitors from Bali and abroad, the afternoon offered a meaningful example of how
culture, community, and conservation can work together.
Thank You
Bali Community Choir extends sincere thanks to the Managing Director and team at Bali
Bird Park for their warm hospitality and partnership in presenting this event.
We are also grateful to the volunteers and venue staff whose support helped the day run
smoothly, and to the audience members who joined us with such enthusiasm and generosity.
Most importantly, thank you to every choir member whose dedication, preparation, and love
of singing made the afternoon possible.
Looking Ahead
This concert marked another successful collaboration between Bali Community Choir and
Bali Bird Park.
We look forward to continuing this partnership and creating future opportunities where music
can bring people together while supporting causes that strengthen our community and care
for the environment we all share.
